1) Who is the product for?
This product is for anyone who is interested in
starting
their own medical transcription business or work
as a
medical transcriptionist. So it can be for
anyone just
starting out but has also helped experience MTs
find new
accounts and expand their business.
2) How is this different than medical
billing?
I’m not a medical biller but from what I
understand is
medical billing has to due with coding and
insurance
payments. The medical biller puts medical codes
on the
reports so that the insurance companies can
process and pay
them. Medical transcriptionists transcribe
medical reports
dictated by physicians but don’t really have any
knowledge
of coding or billing. They are two separate
things
altogether. So for example, I wouldn’t know how
to do
medical billing or coding without taking a
course or
training class.
3) What exactly are they going to learn?
This product will give them a business overview
of medical
transcription. How to register their business,
open a bank
account, file taxes, hire subcontractors, find
accounts,
deal with doctors, what equipment they may need
and so on…
everything they will need to start their own
medical
transcription business. It also gives an
overview of
medical terminology and frequently used medical
abbreviations, it’s a clear explanation of how
medical
terminology works.
4) Why did you create this product?
I mentor a lot of people through my website
AskTheMT.com
and after many requests for help and information
I decided
to put all that information into one product
that would
help anyone interested in this field.
5) Can you really make a living doing this?
Absolutely. You do hear talk sometimes that it
isn’t easy
to find a job, but this is just not my
experience. I had
plenty of work and I have many MT friends who
are never
short for work, many have to turn work away. And
as the
national companies start to play an even bigger
role in
medical transcription they are always short of
good
qualified MTs. Finding work is just not an issue
in this
field.
6) How long can they expect it to take before
making
money doing this?
They will need to learn medical terminology and
other
medical transcription basics such as improve
their typing
speed. An online course can take anywhere from 6
months to
a year depending on how fast they learn or their
commitment
to this course. Once they graduate they should
be able to
start working right away. A few online schools
will
provide you with work assistance once you finish
your
course. I have a full review of the school I
recommend
here: http://www.askthemt.com/virtual-learning-center-
review.html
7) Do you have any testimonials I can use?
Yes, you can use any of the testimonials on the
site. I
am putting together a few more and will send
them to you
soon.
8) Pitfalls they may encounter.
They may find the medical terminology foreign at
first and
there is a learning curve especially if you’ve
never done
this before. But with a little perseverance it
does get
easier. I give some good tips in The Complete
Medical
Transcription System which really helped me
learn and
memorize my medical terminology terms.
9) Benefits of this profession.
Tons. You can work from home, you have total
flexibility
in that you can work for yourself or an online
service, a
local hospital or a combination of all. There
are many
different opportunities and if your choice is to
work in a
hospital setting you can do that. If you prefer
to work
from home but not have your own business you can
do that
too. And of course you can choose to start your
own
business with very little start up costs and a
quick return
on investment.
10) Is it difficult to find work?
No, not in my experience or the experience of my
circle of
colleagues/friends. You may have to pay your
dues for a
little while and work for a little less pay per
line for an
online or national company but with any
profession you need
to gain experience before you can expect higher
pay. In
medical transcription working for a company to
start that
will give you lots of experience in different
specialties
is a smart investment and you’ll still make
decent money.
11) How difficult is the work? What are some
good traits
to have to be successful?
It is as difficult as you make it. Yes there is
a certain
degree of learning, as there is with everything
else but it
is not overly difficult. I tell a story in my
book where
when I started I had the worst typing speed in
my class and
in fact I didn’t even know how to get around a
basic word
processor program. I didn’t even know how to cut
and
paste! So if I can do it, then you certainly can
too.
What I find really helps in this business is to
have a lot
of common sense. You will use it on a daily
basis. This
isn’t a profession where everything will be
cookie cutter
and laid out for you in specific rules. The
“rules” change
constantly and that is where your common sense
will need to
come in. Although you will have a basic
structure on how
to do things you need to be flexible. All good
medical
transcriptionists apply a lot of common sense to
their work.
The only thing I will add is that in my personal
experience this career choice really opened a
lot of doors
for me. I was a single mom and desperately
needed to find
work that would support my son and I and medical
transcription was it. I didn’t have to struggle
to pay the
bills and I had a lot of flexibility which is
often
necessary if you’re raising a family.
This career may not be for everyone. There were
several
people in my class when I took my course who
dropped out
and absolutely hated it but if you’re one of the
many that
enjoy it you’ll find this is a great career
choice with a
lot of earning potential and flexibility. |
